Description:
In 1892, the internationally acclaimed English writer Rudyard Kipling and his new American bride bought 12 acres on a Vermont hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. By year’s end they had begun construction of their dream home, christened Naulakha, a Hindi word meaning “jewel beyond price.” The home was designed by Kipling to resemble a ship with his study in the prow. It was here that Kipling wrote the Jungle Books and Captains Courageous and began Kim and the Just So Stories.
Designated a National historic Landmark, Naulakha was restored in 1993 by The Landmark Trust USA as a fully equipped, self-catering vacation rental. Filled with Kipling’s own furniture, the house sleeps 8 comfortably. Just down the driveway is Kipling’s Carriage House, which sleeps 4, making the property combination perfect for a family reunion, wedding, or other special gathering. The properties may be rented together or separately.
Available year round, Naulakha offers spectacular views, the privacy of 45 protected acres, and the attractions of Southern Vermont, from hiking, biking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing to summer music festivals and the brilliant colors of fall. Naulakha is minutes from Brattleboro’s vibrant restaurant scene and year-round cultural events.
Amenities include gas log fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, large library, pool table and game room, tennis court, pergola, gardens, and private museum for guests only.
From the Naulakha Guest Book:
“It is fascinating to visit the houses of writers and artists, but all you usually get is an hour’s tour with an absolute prohibition ‘not to touch.’ How wonderful then to sit at his desk and soak in Mr. Kipling’s bath.”
“After nine visits this is still a paradise for the body, the soul and the mind.”
