In the Zone II

April 19 - August 3, 2008

On view in four galleries throughout the Museum, In the Zone II is a juried exhibition of new work by artists living in Vermont or within a 100-mile radius of Brattleboro. From more than 300 submissions, juror Denise Markonish, curator of MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, selected thirteen artists to show selections of their work. Artworks include two- and three-dimensional forms, both free-standing and wall-mounted, as well as several site-specific—even room-size—installations, each consisting of many components. Media range from painting, drawing, and photography, to sculpture, multimedia, and installation. Materials used include acrylic, paper, mixed media, wood, textiles, and a startling variety of everyday objects. Some works are abstract, some solidly representational, and some contain humor or whimsy. However, Markonish notes that despite the diversity of work, viewpoint, and style, “One idea . . . revealed itself to be continually strong and fresh: that of the body and the figure.” She sees the exhibition as revealing an idea of “how the figure or body can encompass a whole new zone.”
