Rachel Portesi: Hair Portraits

June 20 – October 12, 2020

Since the beginning of human history, hair has held symbolic meaning. Although meanings and rites vary from culture to culture, most relate to key life events. Rachel Portesi uses hair to both honor and say goodbye to past parts of life. Utilizing the early photographic process of tintype, Portesi’s elaborate hair sculptures address fertility, sexuality, creativity, and nurturing, as well as harmony and discord with nature.
