William Chambers: Spaceship of Dreams

June 23 - October 8, 2017

Spaceship of Dreams is an interactive public art project conceived by artist William Chambers. The project was first realized in a storefront in York, Pennsylvania, where Chambers built a “spaceship” over two months in the spring of 2015. Intending it as a metaphor for dreaming and imagining possibilities, he invited York community members to express and share their dreams for a better world. In the story Chambers created, the ship would blast off and carry the dreams into space. The project attracted 1,500 visitors and collected more than 300 dreams and is now on its national tour.

Here in Brattleboro, the spaceship is repaired and readied for its next voyage while Chambers, the “Space Program Director,” gathers dreams from the town’s residents, including those whose voices are often not part of the mainstream community conversation. Chambers is also collaborating with children from the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro to make model rockets to place in downtown businesses, which serve as additional collection points for the community’s dreams and help spread the word about the spaceship’s mission.

Spaceship of Dreams uses art objects and a fictional environment to create an opportunity for community conversation about what is most important in our lives and the world. Assembled in the style of an old-fashioned tourist attraction or circus sideshow from the time when space travel was just idea fantasy, the exhibit offers a safe space in which to dream.

As the collected dreams of the community accrue, they become part of the installation at BMAC. The exhibit and outreach efforts honor the dreams of all visitors and participants as they contemplate the question, “What would make my life, the town, and the world better?”
