Curriculum Connections and Extensions

Salley Mavor ~ Sewn Stories

- Students view original fabric relief art by Salley Mavor at BMAC.

- Students find narratives in art, based on what they see. In a facilitated discussion with a VTS-trained docent or museum staff, students engage with art as they bring their own experiences and observations to construct meaning.  For more information on VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) see www.vts.org or www.vue.org.

- With the sewing activity we support fine-motor skills, using tools and materials for a specific purpose (needle, thread, scissors), using line to develop a design within/around a form, and more, dependant upon the age of the students.

Back at School Ideas…

-  Younger ages:  Look at other books illustrated by Salley Mavor.

-  Teachers ask students to brainstorm ways that they could practice and use sewing by hand for a classroom  project.

-  Invite a member of the community to visit your class and show how he/she uses sewing to mend or to create another kind of art (quilting, fashion design, handmade books…)
