Islamic Urban Design: Observations, Ideas, and Common Cultural Practice

Medieval Islamic Cities, their monuments and their contemporary selves. This talk is a discussion by a medievalist on the organization and design of some key cities in the Islamic world focusing on the center of the cities and their historic mosques and how they look and are used today. The discussion will include some context of the role of scholarly analysis in our understanding of the city and how history and contemporary politics have affected the use of key buildings particularly the mosques.
